DESCRIPTION

This is certainly one of America's most beloved folk songs. Apparently, this song had become popular as a sea chanty with sailors by the 1880s.

My arrangement, however, casts the wonderful melody in a slower, more reflective mood, focusing on the sense of longing and even sadness that is present in the text.

TEXT INFO

Shenandoah

Traditional American folk song

Complete text:

Oh, Shenandoah,
I long to see you.
Away, you rolling river.
Oh, Shenandoah,
I long to see you.
Away, I'm bound away,
Across the wide Missouri.

Oh, Shenandoah,
I love your daughter.
Away, you rolling river.
For her I'd cross
Your roaming waters.
Away, I'm bound away,
Across the wide Missouri.

'Tis sev'n long years
Since last I saw you,
And heard your rolling river.
'Tis sev'n long years
Since last I saw you.
Away, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri.
